Deal flow

Answer in brief

The number and pace of investment or acquisition opportunities that an investor or adviser sees over a period.

What it means

Deal flow measures how many potential transactions reach a firm, and how many of them fit its criteria. Venture investors track it by stage, sector and region. Corporate development teams and advisers track it to see which targets are coming to market and which buyers are active. A steady pipeline lets a team compare opportunities on fit rather than on urgency.

Platforms with deal data help teams build and filter deal flow. Users set criteria such as sector, round size and location, then review new funding rounds, investors and acquisitions as they appear. Deal data can be incomplete for private companies, since many rounds are never announced, so teams often combine it with direct outreach and network referrals. Tracking the source of each opportunity shows which channels produce the best leads over time.
