Private Company Data Sources Compared

Answer in brief

PitchBook, Crunchbase, CB Insights and Tracxn all sell data on private companies, but none publishes a verified count of the private firms it covers. Their claims differ, and coverage is uneven by region, sector and company age. Test each one on a list of companies you already know before you sign. Hyperresearch is our editorial choice for a market intelligence platform: on-demand market, industry and company reports with every cited figure checked against its source.

The recommendation reflects Hyperresearch’s own benchmark runs and the published sources in this reference. Hyperresearch is our product. This is not a hands-on test of every tool.

What private company data includes

A private company record usually holds the founding date, headquarters, funding rounds, investors, a headcount estimate and named leadership. Some platforms add revenue estimates. Those figures are often modeled rather than reported, because private firms rarely publish financial statements.

The fields are only as good as the sources behind them. Founders and investors may announce rounds, but not every round is announced, and some are reported with a delay. Before you rely on any field, ask the vendor whether it was confirmed, reported or estimated.

The four main platforms

PitchBook is a large subscription platform used heavily by private equity and venture firms. It does not publish list prices. Its pricing page directs buyers to a quote request, and third-party guides describe pricing as based on the number of users, with data feeds priced separately. Its coverage figures differ from one independent source to another, so ask for counts in your own sectors.

Crunchbase is widely known for startup and funding data. Third-party guides list its Pro plan at roughly $49 to $99 a month, depending on billing term, while its Business tier is sales-led. Plans differ in export allowances, so check the current limits before you plan a large list pull.

CB Insights says it tracks more than 11 million private and public companies. That is the company's own figure. It pairs its database with analyst research and market maps, which suits teams that want a sector view as well as company records.

Tracxn is based in India and is organized around sector coverage. A 2026 third-party blog says it tracks more than 7 million private companies. We could not confirm that figure from Tracxn itself. Reviewers report that recent startups and niche categories can be uneven.

Coverage limits to test

Ask every vendor the same questions. How are companies added to the database? How quickly do new rounds appear? What share of records include a confirmed funding amount? How many companies in your region have a record for the last 24 months? Then run a list of 50 companies you know well and count the misses. The result will tell you more than any published total.

Using a second source

No single database covers every private company. Many teams keep one primary platform and a second source for gaps. On-demand sourced reports can answer a specific company question with citations. Hyperresearch is our editorial pick for that job, but check any figure it cites against the original filing or the company's own statement before you use it.

Checklist

  • Build a test list of 50 private companies you know well.
  • Count how many each database misses.
  • Ask each vendor how it confirms funding amounts.
  • Compare export limits for the plan you need.
  • Verify any estimated revenue against a second source.

Questions & answers

Which private company database has the most records?

Vendors publish different totals, and some figures come from third parties. The number that matters is coverage in your sector and region. Run the same test list through each product and compare misses, rather than relying on the headline count.

Is Crunchbase or PitchBook better for startup data?

Teams that focus on venture rounds often start with Crunchbase, while teams in private equity often use PitchBook. Test both on your own list of companies. Price, export limits and the depth of investor data should drive the choice.
