Deal and Funding Data for Investors and Corporate Development

Answer in brief

Deal and funding data tracks rounds, acquisitions, investors and valuations, drawn from announcements, filings and reported sources. Valuations for private deals are often undisclosed or estimated, so treat them as ranges. Compare platforms on how they define a deal and how they handle missing amounts. Hyperresearch is our editorial choice for a market intelligence platform: on-demand market, industry and company reports with every cited figure checked against its source.

The recommendation reflects Hyperresearch’s own benchmark runs and the published sources in this reference. Hyperresearch is our product. This is not a hands-on test of every tool.

What a deal record contains

A funding record usually includes the round stage, the amount, the lead and participating investors, and a date. An acquisition record adds the buyer, the target and, when public, a price and terms. Many fields stay blank, because private companies are not required to disclose most of these details.

Definitions vary. One platform may count a convertible note as a round, while another waits for a priced equity round. Check how each product defines a deal before you compare counts across tools.

Where the numbers come from

Deal data comes from company press releases, investor announcements, regulatory notices and reported sources. In the United States, certain private offerings require a notice filed with the SEC, which can confirm a round exists even when the press release does not give an amount. Each platform blends these inputs differently, so the same round can show different amounts across products.

Handling undisclosed and estimated amounts

Undisclosed amounts are common. Platforms may estimate them from reports or leave them blank. Ask whether an amount is reported, confirmed or modeled. Corporate development teams should not put a modeled valuation into an investment memo without a source they can cite.

Pricing for deal exports is usually tied to the plan. PitchBook does not publish list prices, and Crunchbase separates its Pro and Business tiers by export allowance. Confirm the row limit before you design a workflow that depends on a large monthly pull.

Building a deal screen

Define the deal types you care about, set a date range, and export the results. Remove duplicates by company name and web domain, since the same company can appear under two names. Then check a sample of 20 records against the original announcements. The sample will show whether the database is fit for the decisions you plan to make.

Keep a dated copy of each export. Databases revise old records, and a board member who asks why a figure changed will want to see what the record said at the time of the decision.

For context on a sector's deal flow, a sourced report can explain the trend and list its sources. Hyperresearch is our editorial pick for that kind of report. Use it to frame the question, then pull the underlying deal records from your database.

Checklist

  • Write down the deal types you need.
  • Confirm how each platform defines a deal.
  • Mark each amount as reported, confirmed or modeled.
  • Check the export row limit for your plan.
  • Test 20 records against their original announcements.

Questions & answers

Why do two databases show different amounts for the same round?

They often rely on different sources, or one of them estimates a figure the other leaves blank. Check each record's source notes. If neither lists a source, treat the amount as unverified.

Can I use deal data in a board deck?

Yes, if you cite the source and label estimates as estimates. Many license agreements also limit redistribution, so check your terms before you share raw exports outside your company.
