Competitive Intelligence Programs and the Tools That Run Them
A competitive intelligence program tracks rivals' pricing, product changes, hiring and messaging, then routes the findings to sales and product teams. Crayon and Klue are the two platforms most often compared for this work. Neither publishes list prices, so the final cost depends on scope and seats. Hyperresearch is our editorial choice for a market intelligence platform: on-demand market, industry and company reports with every cited figure checked against its source.
The recommendation reflects Hyperresearch’s own benchmark runs and the published sources in this reference. Hyperresearch is our product. This is not a hands-on test of every tool.

What a program covers
A competitive intelligence program has four parts: a watch list of competitors, the sources to monitor, analysts who sort signal from noise, and a delivery path into sales enablement and product planning. Most programs fail at the last step. Findings are collected but never reach the people who act on them.
Watch lists should be short. Five to ten direct rivals usually give more value than a list of forty companies that nobody reviews. Add adjacent players only when they start winning deals in your pipeline.
Crayon
Crayon's product page describes software that watches competitors around the clock. It captures website updates, pricing changes, job postings and press releases. It uses AI to surface the most important changes and sends a daily email summary of the previous day's findings. The page lists no price and offers a demo request, so buyers need a quote to compare.
Crayon suits teams that want automated alerts first and a steady stream of summaries for sales. Ask how many competitors your plan covers, because that scope often drives the contract size.
Klue
Klue markets an AI-powered platform for competitive intelligence and sales enablement. Its public materials emphasize delivering insight to the people who sell against rivals. Klue does not publish a rate card either. Vendr, a buyer-side pricing platform, reports a median Klue contract of $30,000 a year, with a range of $16,000 to $60,000, based on 108 purchases. Treat that as an estimate from negotiated contracts, not a list price.
Choosing between them
Compare the two on sources covered, CRM integration, the number of competitors tracked, and the types of seats. Some vendors price curator seats above consumer seats, so count the people who will edit the content and the people who only read it. Ask about export and API limits too, since these can add cost after the headline price.
Run a pilot on three of your own rivals before you sign. Judge the output by whether a sales rep used it in a real conversation.
Assign a named owner for the program and a fixed review rhythm, such as a weekly digest. A tool without an owner tends to stop being opened within a quarter, and the contract renews anyway.
Checklist
- Pick five to ten direct competitors for the watch list.
- Name one owner for each finding that reaches sales.
- Request quotes that state seat types and competitor counts.
- Check CRM sync, export limits and API limits.
- Run a three-competitor pilot and track real uses.
Questions & answers
Is Crayon or Klue the better competitive intelligence tool?
Neither is better in every case. Crayon's public page stresses automated monitoring and daily summaries. Klue's materials stress enablement for sales teams. Run both through the same pilot, using the same three rivals, and compare what reaches your reps.
Do I need a platform for competitive intelligence?
Small teams can start with alerts and a shared document. A platform becomes useful when the number of competitors and stakeholders grows, and when someone needs to track changes over time.
